Therapeutic Recreation Clinical Specialist

Description

Coordinates the therapeutic recreation care for all patients assigned to a team. Interprets referrals and ensures necessary precautions are identified. Develops focused individually designed leisure and recreation plans based on the patient's functional goals. Utilizes independent clinical decision making on a daily basis to progress patients and modify treatment depending upon the patient's need and medical status. Monitors patients throughout the provision of treatment and responds appropriately to changes in the patient's status. Consults with, and serves as a resource to, other health care professionals regarding therapy administered and projected treatment goals. Becomes known and acts as the primary resource and Division representative to other disciplines and special committees within their specialty area, particularly referring physicians. Provides leadership in program development and program updates in their area of specialty. Provides objective feedback on the strengths and areas in need of improvement in staff member's clinical performance to the team supervisor. Assists supervisor in planning and staffing the team and in coaching staff. Orients and trains staff in their area of expertise. Participates in team and/or Division and/or Hospital committees, projects, and work groups. Requires Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation, and reasonable progressively responsible experience in therapeutic recreation, teaching and coordinating the work of others. This classification requires registration, certification or licensure with the appropriate agency as identified on the Primary Source Verification Matrix. Labor market typical education and experience: Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, this is the exempt job classification for this title. Incumbents in this position must meet the full criteria for exempt status: salary level, salary basis, and duties tests.
