Provides genetic counseling at an expert level. Demonstrates leadership and shares knowledge and makes contributions within and beyond the clinical unit. Performs comprehensive genetic risk assessment, explain natural history of diagnosis, explain relevant genetic factors, explain available testing and facilitate testing. Coordinates specialized genetic counseling services for identified patient populations, trains students and staff and facilitates research projects. Designs, develops, implements protocols for the integration of emerging technologies that may affect clinical care. Designs, develops, implements and supervises patient/family genetic counseling programs. Initiates, develops, and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and patient care activities in the program specific area of human/clinical genetics. Interviews patients, relatives and others to obtain data on personal medical and family history. Analyzes and interprets information about the genetic disorder and inheritance patterns to aid in diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Counsels patients and families by explaining aspects of the disease, current state of knowledge, and potential diagnostic techniques. Provide clinical onboarding and mentorship to other genetic counselors and health care professionals. Education and experience: Masters? degree in genetic counseling. This Classification requires registration, certification or licensure with the appropriate agency as identified on the Primary Source Verification Matrix. Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor?s degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, this is the exempt job classification for this title. Incumbents in this position must meet the full criteria for exempt status: salary level, salary basis, and duties tests.
