Description

Prepares and reviews contracts involving leases, licenses, purchases, sales, real estate, employment, insurance and other matters. Studies proposed and existing legislation. Gives legal advice with respect to administration, and prepares resolutions and forms. Reviews and approves advertising copy and public statements from a legal standpoint. Anticipates and guards against legal risks involving the organization. Participates in major legal actions. 5 - 8 years of professional experience. Specializes in a particular area, such as litigation, tax, patent, etc. Acts in advisory capacity, making recommendations which may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization's business. Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a J.D. degree as well as admission or eligibility for admission to the State Bar of Michigan. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
