Description

Conducts analyses and experiments on organic and inorganic substances to determine and evaluate their chemical and physical properties, and to investigate their applications to medicine and industry. Conducts experiments to improve upon or to duplicate various materials and substances, and engages in research to develop new methods of processing or production. Examines potential new uses for chemical by-products. Assignments necessitate advanced knowledge. There may be more emphasis on personally conducting important and complex technical investigations. There may be less project direction responsibility. May serve as advisor to lower level personnel. Labor market typical education and experience: Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, this is the exempt job classification for this title. Incumbents in this position must meet the full criteria for exempt status: salary level, salary basis, and duties tests.
