Instrument Maker

Description

Plans, lays out and builds experimental subassemblies and prototype instruments and accessories requiring a high degree of accuracy. Reviews engineering specifications, drawings and sketches, and creates special tools or fittings to build instruments, signage, etc. Also provides repair or modification to existing instrumentation or equipment. Consult with faculty and students regarding the specifications for the accessories or instruments. Work in a wide variety of materials including but not limited to; electronic components, metals (brass, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, gold, etc.), plastic, ceramic and glass (pyrex, quartz, glass to metal, etc.). 3-5 years of experience in area of specialization. Applies advanced skills in area of specialization. May adapt procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs. Duties and tasks are frequently nonroutine. Resolves most questions and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher levels. Works under minimal supervision. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt.
