Description

Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, and related oral structures. Examines patients to determine nature of condition, utilizing x-rays, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures. Cleans, fills, extracts, and replaces teeth, using hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical implements. Provides preventive dental services to patient and education in oral and dental hygiene. Mentors dental students regarding appropriate diagnosis and treatment of emergency dental problems. May create and modify procedures to promote changing goals for teaching, research, and clinical care. Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a DDS as well as a current license to practice dentistry in the State of Michigan. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
